Skating Club of Wilmington celebrates reunion

50th Reunion

More than 100 current and former skaters,coaches and members gathered in Wilmington, Delaware, on July 23 for the first Skating Club of Wilmington reunion.

The event, held in conjunction with the 50th annual Skate Wilmington competition, attracted alumni from 14 states. The club’s history of Olympic and World athletes includes Ashley Wagner, Kitty and Peter Carruthers, Stacey Smith and John Summers, Gillian Wachsman and Todd Waggoner, Elisa Spitz and Scott Gregory, Carol Fox and Richard Dalley, and Lea Ann Miller and Bill Fauver. Other Olympians and World medalists who trained at the rink include Calla Urbanski and Rocky Marval, Viktor Pfeifer and Suzy Semanick.

Stacey Smith, 1980 Olympian, and renowned former Skating Club of Wilmington coach Ron Ludington delivered heartfelt speeches that brought back many fond memories for the attendees.

Attendees sang “Happy Birthday” to longtime member Martha Baumeister, who celebrated her 90th birthday on the day of the reunion. Skating Club of Wilmington coach Igor Yaroshenko played a 40-minute video montage of club memories.

The club has a long history of successful competitions, including having hosted the first U.S. Adult Championships in 1995. The Skating Club of Wilmington was established in 1955 and has been located on Carruthers Lane in Wilmington since the rink was completed in 1964.
